INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

Preparation

Manuscripts must be typed, one side only, double-spaced, leaving wide margins (1-inch minimum) on standard 8-1/2-by-11-inch white bond paper. Brief, concise articles are preferred; an ideal manuscript will not exceed six to eight typed double-spaced pages, or approximately 1,000 to 2,000 words total.

Submission

The deadline for articles is assigned by the editor. All submissions must first be reviewed by the editor and/or editorial board before being sent to the Executive Office for production. AT LEAST ONE ORIGINAL COPY OF EACH ARTICLE SHOULD BE SUBMITTED PLUS ANY ACCOMPANYING FIGURES OR GRAPHS. Two original copies are preferred, when available. Facsimile transmissions of articles or artwork to the Executive Office are discouraged, due to their lesser quality for editing, typesetting or reproduction.

Editing

All articles, whether solicited or unsolicited, are subject to editorial review. All material will be reviewed by the editor, the editorial staff and/or the editorial board as needed. Articles will be edited to ensure clarity, good grammar and appropriate language and to conform to the subspecialty newsletter's style, format and space restrictions.

Authorship

Accepted material becomes the copyrighted property of the subspecialty newsletter and may not be republished or reprinted, in part or in whole, without permission from the editor. Requests to reprint articles or illustrations in another publication may be authorized at the discretion of the editor. Only written reprint requests will be considered. Requests will be reviewed based on their individual merit and the proposed use(s) of the material. The Society reserves the right to reject any or all requests for reprints of its newsletter's articles. The Society does not publish anonymous, nonattributable or commercially produced articles or materials and does not currently accept or solicit for paid-advertising content. It does accept Contributorship grants from commercial or nonmedical companies to underwrite the production costs of the newsletter. Contributorship will be acknowledged in the publication. The views expressed in the Society's newsletter are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent or reflect the views, policies or actions of the Society. The Society expects authors to disclose voluntarily any institutional or commercial affiliation(s) or association(s) that may pose a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted material.

Graphics

The editor requests advance notification if the submission will include graphics (e.g., tables, illustrations, photographs, charts, graphs). Illustrative material must be identified by its reference number in the text and be accompanied by a short legend or summary statement. Tables should be self-explanatory and should supplement, not duplicate, the text. Photographs should be black-and-white glossy prints, if possible, and should include a suitable caption. The size of most graphics can be reduced or enlarged in press.

References

The Society's newsletter will print a maximum of 10 references. All references should be in the order cited in the text. If more than 10 sources are cited, readers will be referred to the author for the complete list. Bibliographies will be published if relevant to the article and if limited to no more than 10 citations. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of references. Authors should follow guidelines as outlined in the AMA Manual of Style (Williams & Wilkins, 1989). Abbreviations of journal names should follow the National Library of Medicine format (see Index Medicus or List of Serials).
