This open forum is hosted by the ASA Commitee on Practice Parameters. All participants at the SAMBA meeting are welcome to attend. No preregistration is required.

The open forum will be the first public presentation of the proposed ASA Practice Parameter on OR Fire Preventiaon and Management. The audience will be invited to comment on all aspects of the proposed practice parameter. This commentary will be carefully noted and used to refine the final recommendations that will be submitted to the ASA Reference Committee and House of Delegates in October 2007. The presentation will include a overview and rigorous synthesis of existing literature and expert opinion.

This meeting is designed for anesthesiologists and anesthesia providers and practitioners who specialize in ambulatory anesthesia.

About This Meeting
Topics for this meeting were selected by various methods. Suggestions for future topics were derived from evaluations of the 2006 and other previous Annual and Mid Year Meetings, the Annual and Mid Year Meeting Committees and Board members. These suggestions were discussed by our authorities in the field of ambulatory anesthesia with educators who attended previous annual, mid year and board meetings. The purpose of this annual meeting is to educate and share information that will enable anesthesiology practitioners to provide the highest level of ambulatory anesthesia services.

One of the most popular sessions presented at the SAMBA Annual Meeting is the discussion of cases as they appear in the real world., and for the SAMBA 22nd Annual Meeting we would like to receive your real world case. Program Objectives - TOP

Preconvention Workshop: Preop and Postoperative Evaluation
To learn about the most recent policies and procedures that are related to the care of ambulatory surgery patients; To learn about new advances in regional anesthesia for ambulatory surgery patients; To learn about the latest approaches in the preoperative work up of the ambulatory surgery patient.

Workshop 1: Acupuncture
To have a better understanding of the history of acupuncture; and become familiar with scientific evidence and indications of acupuncture treatment; Evaluate acupuncture and various micro-system paradigms; Incorporate acupuncture in ambulatory anesthesia practice; Demonstration and hands-on sessions of acupuncture will be provided for the participants.

Workshop 2A and 2B: Ultrasound in Anesthesia
To allow participants to familiarize themselves with handheld ultrasound to facilitate regional anesthetic techniques and central venous canulation (CVC); Understand the benefits of using ultrasound for blocks for ambulatory anesthetic management as well as postoperative pain relief. Breakout sessions will cover the use of ultrasound in above and below clavicle upper extremity blocks, lower extremity blocks and ultrasound for CVC insertion using models and illustrations.

Workshop 3: Administrative
To learn what National and the SAMBA database will have on the practice of ambulatory anesthesia; To learn how to implement the most recently recommended policies and procedures into your ambulatory surgery center.

Workshop 4: Regional Anesthesia
To understand modern techniques of single-injection and continuous peripheral nerve blocks; To understand strategies for successful perioperative management of nerve blocks; To understand complications of nerve blocks and strategies how to avoid them.

Workshop 5: Tricks of the Trade
To learn about the newest devices for management of the airway; To learn how to optimize the anesthetic management of adults and children presenting for ambulatory surgery.
