Preconvention Workshop on Preoperative Evaluation
and Perioperative Medicine
The participant will learn about both medical and logistical
aspects of preoperative evaluation and about considerations for the specific
disease entities and patient
populations listed.
Advanced Administrative Workshop
Participants will be able to accurately discuss principles and strategies
surrounding the issues of accreditation, personnel credentialing and management,
and outcome measurement use in an ambulatory surgery center. Specific
examples will be used to discuss these issues, including pitfalls of facility
accreditation, management of "difficult" surgeons and other
staff, and clinical outcome measurement as a tool to improve quality and
potentially increase market share. This workshop will consist of both
a panel and a set of small roundtable discussions of participants’
own "real-world" experiences and questions.
Ultrasound in Anesthesia Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to allow participants to familiarize themselves
with a handheld ultrasound device to facilitate regional anesthetic techniques
and central venous cannulation (CVC).Workshop attendees will understand
the benefits of using ultrasound for blocks for ambulatory anesthetic
management as well as postoperative pain relief. Handson breakout sessions
will cover the use of ultrasound in above and below clavicle upper extremity
blocks and ultrasound for CVC insertion using live models and illustrations.
Regional Anesthesia Workshop
Single Injection and Catheter Techniques for Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity,
and Paravertebral Blocks: Single injection and catheter echniques will
be demonstrated first in a pre-recorded videocast. The peripheral nerve
locks will be discussed in more detail in small breakout sessions using
live models and illustrations. Workshop attendees will understand the
risks and benefits of blocks for ambulatory anesthetic management as well
as postoperative pain relief. Breakout sessions will cover upper extremity,
lower extremity and paravertebral blocks.
Understanding the New Anesthesia Machines Workshop
At the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will understand the
physiology of mechanical ventilation in the operating room and the limitations
of traditional anesthesia ventilators. Participants will also understand
the features of newer anesthesia ventilators which improve their performance,
the indications for, and limitations of, different modes of ventilation
including volume controlled ventilation, pressure controlled ventilation,
pressure support ventilation and how to use bedside respiratory monitoring
effectively to optimize the ventilation strategy.
Clinical Forum/Office-Based Anesthesia Workshop
Through discussion of clinical scenarios, participants will examine the
differences between the office environment and the more familiar ASC/hospital
setting. Equipment, patient selection, and anesthetic techniques will
be discussed. Participants will also learn the regulatory and administrative
considerations unique to office-based anesthesia, such as peer review,
contracting, management of controlled substances, and legal responsibility
for the patient during recovery and after discharge.
Research Poster Discussions
To present current basic and clinical research relevant to the
art and science of ambulatory anesthesia. To discuss in a small group
format the significance of this research as it relates to the practical
aspects of ambulatory anesthesia.
ASA Update
The ASA President will update the audience on issues of importance to
anesthesiologists in ambulatory and office practice. Cases From the Real
World: This panel will present challenging clinical situations that could
be encountered by an anesthesiologist practicing in an outpatient or office
setting. Panelists will discuss perioperative management strategies; time
is allowed for input from the audience.
SAMBA President's Address
The outgoing SAMBA president will inform the audience of the achievements
of the Society during the year.
History of Ambulatory Anesthesia
In recognition of SAMBA's 20th anniversary, a presentation on the history
of ambulatory anesthesia will serve to provide a framework for participants
to understand the state of the art in this specialty. IARS Address: Summary
of Ambulatory Literature: The participant will learn the most relevant
findings from recent articles in ambulatory anesthesia literature. Risk
and Outcome in Ambulatory Anesthesia: Panel members will update the audience
on the overall epidemiology of outcomes in ambulatory anesthesia, on patterns
of anesthetic-related pediatric cardiac arrest and on possible mechanisms
to reduce surgical risk in the perioperative period.
Obesity and Sleep Apnea
Participants will learn about physiologic considerations in anesthetizing
the morbidly obese, as well as the pathophysiology and epidemiology of
sleep apnea in adult and pediatric patients.
Regional Anesthesia
The panel will address outcome data from a large regional anesthesia practice
in the ambulatory setting, evaluation and follow-up of complications of
regional anesthesia and issues in the management of peripheral nerve catheters
for analgesia after ambulatory surgery.
Resident Session: Capitalism and Socialism
Economics and Politics in Anesthesia: Participants will discuss the implications
of various practice models (private practice and academic practice) and
current political and regulatory issues affecting the anesthesiologist.
Nuts and Bolts of Regional Anesthesia
The participant will learn how regional anesthesia practice may enhance
efficiency in the ambulatory setting and will hear recommendations for
active practitioners on how to teach residents and staff regional techniques.
Information on billing for regional anesthesia will also be presented.
Administrative Issues: The panel will address issues in patient selection
for both adult and pediatric patients and review sedation policies and
the role of the ASC medical director in complying with regulations in
this area.
Patient Safety
The participant will learn what is known about the etiology of sevoflurane
related vaporizer fires and possible methods of prevention. Participants
will learn the epidemiology of complications with the laryngeal mask airway
and will learn approaches to management of critical incidents in the operating
room.
The Cutting Edge
Information on new areas of interest in ambulatory anesthesia will be
presented. These include pharmacology and clinical relevance of the alpha-agonist
dexmedetomidine, issues relating to depth of anesthesia monitoring, particularly
in light of recent recommendations for awareness prevention, and information
on the relevance of the inflammatory response and its modulation to perioperative
risk and outcome. piece. Sizes may vary depending on your computer
