Title: Consequences of Poorly Controlled Acute Pain and New Frontiers in opioid pharmacotherapy

The symposium will focus on highlighting the unmet needs and therapeutic advances in post-operative pain management with specific focus on IV opioid analgesics. Phase 3 data on Oliceridine (TRV130), a novel µ receptor G protein Pathway Selective (µ-GPS) modulator, will be presented to provide the clinical perspective of differential signaling approach and how it may address the unmet needs & consequences of poorly-controlled acute postoperative pain. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.

Optimization of pain control while minimizing side-effects from medications is one of the core elements of enhanced recovery. Infiltration of local anesthetic into tissue planes such as the transversus abdominis (TAP) and quadratus lumborum (QL) planes, rectus sheath, and chest wall muscle planes (PECS 1, 2 and serratus) are becoming increasingly popular and have been shown to provide enhanced analgesia for abdominal and breast procedures. Similarly, targeted ultrasound-guided infiltration of the knee is a novel technique that results in quality analgesia with accelerated mobility and functional recovery. With their favorable risk and side effect profile, these techniques are rapidly becoming a standard in many centers, used to supplement or event replace paravertebral, epidural, and nerve block analgesia.

At this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the indications, sonoanatomy and techniques for performing these ultrasound-guided infiltration procedures. This 3 hour session will incorporate didactic lectures, innovative 3D virtual cadaver dissection, hands-on scanning of live models and technique practice with high-fidelity anatomical gel phantom models.
