Thank you for all those who attended the SAMBA resident meeting.  Recruitment was key at the meeting, and we spent the majority of an hour’s time outlining the goals of the relatively new committee.
 

Long term goals:  The SAMBA resident section is a relatively new group, about 3 years old, and the goals are to have resident participation at an organization level and to promote resident interest in ambulatory anesthesia.  It is felt that issues of residents are slightly different from those of practicing anesthesiologists, and this committee is to promote leadership and active participation.
 

Short term goals:  Recruitment of residents is the main goal, especially of CA1 and CA2.  Since Abbott this year did not sponsor the Annual Chief Resident’s meeting, SAMBA had waived registration fees for Chief Resident Attendees.  However, this new change of events did not reach the residents, and resident turnout was lower than last year’s meeting at Scottsdale, AZ despite a more convenient location.  We believe we can still make the SAMBA meeting as the “Chief Resident Meeting.”  Several ideas in regards to recruitment:

1. Organizing a social event with ASA and combined resident sections at the SAMBA midyear meeting (also the ASA) in Chicago.  Like the ASA meeting a couple of years ago in Las Vegas there was a sponsored night out for residents and their significant others.  It would be a way for residents to network in a large meeting and new city.
2. Easier identification of residents at the meeting.  Mention of different colored name tags, or a separate list.
3. Continuation of e-mail newsletter delivery.  It is an effective way to mass information to residents however a concern is that not all e-mails are reaching to the intended audience.  Much fact-finding will ensue in the following months and tweaking of the system.  There are however many topics of ambulatory anesthesia to be discussed.

 

Elections:  Voting of meeting attendees provided the following new officers.  They will be spearheading SAMBA’s direction for the following years.
