SAMBA SURVEY - TOP

LAST CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE….Deadline November 30th

The Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia is conducting a brief on-line survey to assess how well information on CO2 absorbent is reaching practicing anesthesiologists. Your input is valuable to the success of this survey. Please take a moment to complete the "SAMBA Survey on the Use of CO2 Absorbents.” The survey should take less than two minutes to complete. The survey results will be made available to the SAMBA membership.

PONV CONSENSUS GUIDELINES
- TOP

Dear SAMBA Members,

The Board of Directors of SAMBA commissioned Tong J. Gan, M.D. to develop a consensus document on the management of PONV. A group of experts in PONV met (with industry support) to develop a draft consensus document. This has been completed. As this consensus document reflects on SAMBA as an organization it is important that input from SAMBA members be sought and thoughtfully reviewed by these experts. Members were allowed to comment during the Mid Year Meeting. We are now making this process available to all members via the SAMBA web site
www.sambahq.org. Members are asked to visit the web site to download the PDF file. Once you have reviewed this document, please send comments to Dr. Brian Parker (Chair of the SAMBA Committee on Scientific Papers) at parkerb1@ccf.org. All comments for consideration must be received by November 29, 2006.

It is our expectation that the results of this process will appear in an upcoming edition of Anesthesia and Analgesia.

Walter G. Maurer, M.D.
President, SAMBA

PONV GUIDELINES - TOP

The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses’ (ASPAN) convened a Consensus Conference on the Prevention and/or Management of PONV/PDNV and has published its guidelines - http://www.aspan.org/ponv_pdnv_guidelines.htm.

SAMBA, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) are pleased to offer their support to this very important project.

NSAS SURVEY - TOP

The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has re-fielded the National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery (NSAS) to measure hospital and free-standing ambulatory surgery in 2006. Data from the NSAS will not be final and available until late 2007 or early 2008. When the survey is completed, data will be publicly available for analysis and research. You can find additional information on the NSAS at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nsas.htm.

There have been 5 training sessions in different regions of the country for over 150 Census Field Representatives. Training ended in May and Census began the process of contacting and inducting hospitals and ASCs during the summer. Endorsements for the NSAS from professional organizations, including SAMBA, were helpful in gaining the support of facilities to participate in the survey.

There are about 700 hospitals and ASCs sampled for the NSAS. At this time Census reports that approximately 450 facilities have agreed to participate. Data collection will continue through March 2007. After all of the data are entered into electronic form, a file will be sent to NCHS for processing. If all goes well, 2006 data will be available from NSAS in late 2007 or early 2008. For questions, call Karen Lees, Epidemiologist at Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics, 301-458-4518 (KLees@cdc.gov).
