A MESSAGE FROM SAMBA'S NEW PRESIDENT: TJ GAN, M.B., F.R.C.A.
- TOP

It is with great honor and privilege to serve as your President for 2008-2009. SAMBA has grown over the years and has matured into young adulthood. The society celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2006. It is perhaps timely to be reminded of the society’s mission.

"To advance the practice of ambulatory anesthesia in all ambulatory venues, to encourage high ethical and professional standards by fostering and encouraging education and research, and to provide professional guidance for the practice of ambulatory anesthesia."

SAMBA was formed for the benefits of its members and we will continue to strive to meet that challenge. The society has achieved significant successes over the years. However, there are still much to do. I look forward to an exciting year with many on-going projects which will benefit the membership. I would like to urge you to be actively involved in SAMBA and welcome your ideas and suggestions.

Remember, we need to work together to advance the specialty of ambulatory anesthesia.

AWARENESS AND THE BIS MONITOR - TOP

I would like to thank all of you who were able to participate in our last journal club Care for the Jehovah's Witnesses. Our next real-time journal club discussion will be broadcasted on June 17th at 7 PM EST.

The topic of discussion will be Awareness and the BIS Monitor. I am inviting anyone who has interest in this topic to join in on the discussion by e-mailing me at jahana@ccf.org. I will send instructions detailing the sign-in process allowing you to participate. Space is severely limited so please e-mail as soon as possible. And again, I challenge all to actively help promote educational activities and welcome your ideas.

WEB SITE OF THE MONTH - TOP

The goal of this section is to share certain highlights of informative web-sites.  If you have a favorite web page that you’ve visited, please e-mail me at VSMOOT@anes.umm.edu.

Procedure Specific Postoperative Pain Management (known as PROSPECT)Optimizing surgical outcomes continues to be what we all strive for.  As presented at the recent annual SAMBA meeting, addressing postoperative pain management is a key factor in determining quality of outcomes.  A web-site, designed to address Procedure Specific Postoperative Pain Management (known as PROSPECT) is available. This web-site (www.postoppain.org) is managed and developed by anesthesiologists and surgeons (including our own Dr. Joshi) with the goal of providing a set of procedure specific, evidenced based recommendations for a variety of procedures such as:

  1. Abdominal Hysterectomies
  2. Herniorrhaphy
  3. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies
  4. Non-cosmetic Breast Surgery
  5. Open Colonic Resection
  6. Thoracotomies
  7. Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasties

The working group of physicians performs extensive literature reviews based on the protocol of the Cochrane Collaboration leading to the development of  guidelines for postoperative pain management.

The web-site is developed by CHOICE PHARMA and funded by Pfizer.  The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Management also support their efforts.

Feedback
Please feel free to give us your feedback about this web-site and this new section (VSMOOT@anes.umm.edu).  Furthermore, if you have a web-site that you have found to be informative for the practice of anesthesiology, please let us know. Thanks.
