SAMBA TALKS. DOES SAMBA READ?! - TOP

Total SAMBA Membership is over 4,500 and a very high proportion - 86% - are registered to receive this newsletter. In future we will track visits to the site to establish how many are coming to it for the newsletter, and what sections of the newsletter attract the most interest.

Our editor has been mulling over some ideas to stimulate interest in this publication and to help make the SAMBA web site the preferred destination for current information on outpatient anesthesia. Should we offer podcasts? Legislative updates? A monthly guest column? CME material?

If you have any suggestions for what you'd like to see here, please pass your suggestions along to me, Gary Kantor.

ANESTHESIOLOGY IN ALASKA, JUNE 17-24, 2006
- TOP

The Celebrity cruise ship SUMMIT will provide a stimulating environment for discussing the latest advances in anesthesia for outpatients undergoing both minor (i.e., office-based and ambulatory) and major (cardiovascular, neuro and general) surgery. The speakers include Paul White (UT Southwestern), Amir Hadzic (Columbia St. Lukes Roosevelt) and Glenn Gravlee (The Ohio State University).

In addition to the 7-day cruise from Vancouver, British Columbia to Seward, Alaska, there are optional 3 or 5 day land packages to Danili National Park and world-class fishing in King Salmon, Alaska. This program is approved for up to 18 PRA Category 1 credit hours by The Ohio State University CME Department.

Please contact Paul White at paul.white@utsouthwestern.edu if you are interested. There are only a limited number of cabins available.

SAMBA RESIDENT SECTION - TOP

The Chief Resident conference which has been held in conjunction with the SAMBA meeting is unfortunately no longer being offered by its corporate sponsor. However, a  limited number of travel awards are available for anesthesiology residents whose scientific abstracts are accepted for presentation at the SAMBA 2006 Annual Meeting. In addition, Peter Glass and Tong Gan report on efforts to replace the sponsored program with equally interesting opportunities for chief residents to encourage their interest in ambulatory anesthesia.

SAMBA understands the importance of resident education and the future of residents in anesthesiology. We have designed a program that will continue to provide leadership, educational and networking opportunities for chief residents. To reduce the financial burden that the loss of industry support has caused SAMBA is offering the following discounts to Chief Residents:

  1. Complimentary Meeting Registration ($200)
  2. Complimentary Registration for 1 of the following Workshops:
  • Preconvention Workshop: Postoperative Management
  • Workshop 1: Acupuncture for Ambulatory Anesthesia Practice ($15)
  • Workshop 2A: An Introduction to Ultrasound and Anesthesia ($15)
  • Workshop 2B: An Introduction to Ultrasound and Anesthesia ($15)
  • Workshop 3: Advanced Administrative ($15)
  • Workshop 4: Regional Anesthesia: Peripheral Blocks of the Upper and Lower Extremities ($25)
  • Workshop 5: Anesthesia Simulation ($15)

In addition to the above discounts, SAMBA has created a General Session dedicated to residents. On Saturday, May 6, 2006, from 4:00 – 5:10 p.m., Alan P. Marco, M.D., will moderate General Session 5: Residents Session: Administration and Practice. SAMBA Leaders will host a special reception for Chief Residents immediately following this program. SAMBA Leaders and Chief Residents can continue to network during the SAMBA Social Evening at the International Spy Museum.

SAMBA has six other General Sessions and Parallel Tracks that Chief Residents may find particularly interesting.  Interested incoming chiefs or their program directors should contact the SAMBA office to register.  On Saturday afternoon, a special panel is offered focusing on administrative and practice issues for residents.  SAMBA will also sponsor a reception for incoming chief residents to give them the opportunity to meet their counterparts from other programs.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the SAMBA Office at (847) 825-5586.
