SUCCESSFUL 20TH ANNUAL MEETING
- TOP

SAMBA's 20th Annual Meeting was held May 12 - 15, 2005, at the Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Arizona. The meeting was well-attended with approximately 135 registrants at the pre-convention workshop and 530 at the meeting overall.

Hands-on workshops were extremely popular; these included regional anesthesia, ultrasound in anesthesia, and the new anesthesia machines.  Dr. Jonathan Pregler, Medical Director of Ambulatory Surgery at UCLA, presented the keynote address on History of Ambulatory Anesthesia in recognition of this anniversary meeting. Dr. TJ Gan presented the IARS Address which was a summary of recent ambulatory literature. Dr. Barbara Gold moderated the popular Cases in the Real World. Other sessions covered scientific and clinical information on patient safety, risk and outcome, obesity and sleep apnea, regional anesthesia, and other topics relevant to ambulatory anesthesia. Breakout sessions addressed administrative topics and practical aspects of regional anesthesia. Dr. Eugene Sinclair, ASA President, presented the ASA Update during Saturday's luncheon.

Attendees also enjoyed the newly-renovated hotel and the wonderful Arizona weather.  Saturday evening's social event was a buffet dinner in the Camelback's North Garden, where guests enjoyed a southwestern trio, caricature artists, and an astronomer.

Dr. TJ Gan will chair next year's Annual Meeting with Dr. Peter Glass as vice-chair.  Plan now to attend SAMBA's 21st Annual Meeting which will be held Thursday, May 4 - Sunday, May 7, 2006 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC.

SAMBA REGIONAL ANESTHESIA COMMITTEE TO PUBLISH PRACTICAL REVIEW OF OUTCOMES AND MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES - TOP

The SAMBA Regional Anesthesia (RA) Committee will be publishing a symposium issue in International Anesthesiology Clinics (Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins) in July 2005.

The 20-manuscript symposium is subdivided into 5 sections:

  1. Administrative approaches and economic analysis;
  2. Physical plant and equipment;
  3. Outcomes and complications – a global view;
  4. Outcome issues per surgical procedure category;
  5. Important adjuncts (such as multimodal analgesics and antiemetics).

Authors contributing to the issue include Drs. Karen Nielsen (Duke University), Lorri Lee (University of Washington), James Mayfield (Medical College of Georgia); Andrew Gray (University of California at San Francisco); Sugantha Ganapathy (University of Western Ontario), Roy Greengrass (Mayo Clinic – Jacksonville), Bernard Dalens (Laval University – Montreal), Michael Mulroy (Virginia Mason Medical Center – Seattle), Admir Hadzic (Columbia University – New York), and Girish Joshi (University of Texas-Southwestern).

The issue is edited by the SAMBA Regional Anesthesia Committee chair, Dr. Brian Williams ( University of Pittsburgh). The goal of the symposium issue is to equip anesthesiologists with both practice management strategies and outcome study reviews, in order to justify the transformation toward a high-volume ambulatory / RA practice. This symposium issue includes practical, step-by-step guidelines with respect to health care teambuilding, clinical pathway formation, recovery room bypass implementation, RA procedural billing, and hospital cost savings analysis.

Pre-Order Discount for SAMBA Members

This issue is available to SAMBA members for $60 if pre-ordered before the issue goes to print. Interested SAMBA members should call 1-800-638-3030 or 1-301-223-2300 to place the order.
